Tūranga Library and NZSO Trip

Last Friday, Rooms 1, 2, and 3 went on a trip to Tūranga Library and to see the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra (NZSO).

At Tūranga, the librarians gave us a tour of the new building.

We had to put our left hands on the bars to walk up the steps. This helped us to be safe and be considerate of others moving the opposite way.

We also learnt about the different birds that are represented on each floor. On the ground floor there is the pukeko. On the first floor it is the muttonbird. The second is the tui, the third the kakapo, and the on the fourth floor it is the kereru. We were very lucky and we got to go up on the elevator.

Here is a photo of us on the top floor looking down over the square!

We also got to see the robot that sorts the books for the librarians.
We learnt that they have about 200 000 books at Tūranga! There are different books in different languages and a wide range of genres available.

Miss Lee was disappointed when we didn't get time to explore the activities on the first floor.

The orchestra was also so amazing as they told us about "Robert" and his melodic life. Francis liked how one of the musicians bounced the basketball and we had to guess what sports "Robert" liked. We saw lots of different instruments like the violin, trumpet, and harp. At the very end we got to hear the Star Wars theme song.

Needs vs Wants

This term our integrated learning or topic is on Social Justice. This is difficult for us to understand, so we have started by thinking about our needs and wants. Needs are things that we need to live and wants are things that we can have but are not a must to survive.

When we circled all the things we own that are 'Wants' items, we found that we were quite lucky to have all that we do!

We also talked about why the 6 main 'Needs' identified are important for us to survive.

Pink Shirt Day

Last Friday, St Bernadette's School showed their support for anti-bullying week by having a Pink Shirt Day. Some of us were totally pinked out! In the photos below, we are holding up some pink biscuits that we were able to share. Thank you parents and whānau for helping us to support this important day.

Cybersmart with Miss Morgan

Miss Morgan has been teaching us about being safe when using our digital devices and when sharing things with others online. By looking through Miss Morgan's dog Cooper's blog, we learnt about private and personal information. Private information includes things that we shouldn't share online and personal information includes things that we can share with others.

Singing for our community

Room 3 were invited to the Hornby Day Care Centre for the Elderly to share some of our musical talent. Although we didn't have a lot of time to prepare for this event, we were very excited because of our love for music and singing. The only challenge we faced was picking our favourite songs to sing!

Here are some short clips of us singing "Better Than The Riches Of This World" and "I Could Sing Of Your Love".

We also had the opportunity to introduce ourselves individually to everyone that we had performed to. The centre has invited us to come back and hear the song that they have been writing together. We look forward to hearing them sing next time!

Room 3

Tēnā Koutou!

We are St Bernadette's Ruma 3! We are a fun-loving group of Year 3 and 4 students. Some of us are just learning to use Chromebooks and begin blogging. We are all very excited to use our Chromebooks more and more and become Cybersmart digital tool users - we will of course also keep up our practice of pen and paper!

First, a sensible photo of us.

Now, we capture a couple of silly photos!
